QR Codes Explained: What to Encode and How to Make Them Reliable

Create useful QR codes for links and text while avoiding common scanning and printing problems.

Encode the final destination

For a website QR code, use the complete final URL including HTTPS. Avoid temporary or private URLs that other people will not be able to open.

Keep the content concise

More encoded data creates a denser QR pattern. Shorter URLs and concise text are generally easier to scan, especially when the code will be displayed or printed at a small size.

Test before publishing

Scan the QR code with more than one phone before printing posters, packaging or business cards. Confirm both recognition and the destination content.

Leave visual breathing room

A QR code needs clear space around its edges. Do not crop tightly into the pattern or place busy graphics immediately against it.
