PRACTICAL GUIDE
JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?
Understand the practical differences between JPG, PNG and WebP and choose the right format for photos, graphics and websites.
JPG for photographs
JPG uses lossy compression and is widely supported. It is a strong default for photographs and other images with many colours when transparency is not required.
PNG for transparency and crisp graphics
PNG supports transparency and lossless compression. It is useful for logos, screenshots, interface elements and graphics where sharp edges are important, but files can be larger than JPG or WebP.
WebP for modern web delivery
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency. It often delivers a smaller file than older formats, which makes it attractive for websites and web apps.
There is no single winner
The best choice depends on content, compatibility and quality requirements. Keeping a high-quality source and exporting the right delivery format is usually better than converting the same compressed file repeatedly.
